Texas Tax Free Weekend 2015

The first day of school is just weeks away, and parents across the Austin area are getting their kids ready to head back to school. This year, families are estimated to spend about $630 on school supplies in 2015. One of the ways the state of Texas helps families save is through Tax Free Weekend. Held each August since 1999, this special weekend removes the sales tax on most clothing, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks priced below $100. This year, Tax Free Weekend will be held August 7th - 9th. While the majority of back-to-school items will be tax exempt, there are a few exceptions. Get an overview of items eligible for tax free savings:

Clothing and Shoes- Most clothing items, including shirts, shorts, jeans, pants, school uniforms, sweaters, jackets, skirts, dresses, sneakers, boots, dress shoes, and athletic clothing are tax free items. However, jewelry, purses, wallets, and other accessories are NOT tax exempt. Special sports equipment, such as pads and cleats, are also NOT tax free.

School Supplies- Calculators, tape, compasses, notebooks, crayons, paper, glue, folders, pens, pencils, highlighters, scissors, protractors, index cards, legal pads, writing tablets, markers, and lunch boxes are all tax-free during this weekend, as long as they are priced below $100. Computers, tablets, printers, and other electronic equipment are NOT tax-free.

Backpacks- Any backpack or book bag is tax-free this weekend. Rolling backpacks are also exempt, as long as they can be worn as a regular backpack. Any other type of luggage, including briefcases, is NOT tax-free. You cannot purchase more than 10 backpacks tax free at one time without an exemption certificate.

Shoppers can also take advantage of tax free weekend by skipping the stores and shopping online. If a retailer offers layaway, shoppers can place items on layaway tax free. Many stores will also offer special tax free discounts during this weekend. Lakeline Mall in Northwest Austin has extended hours Friday through Sunday, and the Hill Country Galleria is hosting a special shopping event where shoppers who spend over $100 on school supplies receive a $20 gift card! If you’re heading out during tax free weekend, be sure to plan ahead to make the most of your back-to-school shopping trip.
