With so much growth in the West Austin area, it’s important to keep local roadways in their best shape possible. The Texas Department of Transportation currently has two ongoing projects in the Bee Cave/Lakeway area with plans for a third. Here’s a breakdown of the current and future improvements being made to local roadways:

Bee Creek Road- Road crews have been making improvements to Bee Creek Road since 2013. When complete, Bee Creek Road will feature four lanes instead of the previous two. Bike lanes and sidewalks will also border the roadway. To help alleviate traffic during school days, a signal will be placed at the intersection at the entrance to Lake Travis Middle School. Two left-turn lanes will also be added at the intersection of Bee Creek Road and Highway 71, to help traffic flow more smoothly in this heavy-traffic area. The project is expected to be complete sometime in 2015.

Highway 71- Construction began in February of this year on Highway 71, and is scheduled to be completed in July of 2015. Improvements to this major roadway include adding a center turn lane between Vail Divide and Hamilton Pool Road. The turn lane will measure about 1.5 miles in length and allow commuters to more easily access roadways that intersect with Highway 71, without disrupting the flow of traffic.

Hamilton Pool Road- If there’s a roadway in the Bee Cave area that has seen increased traffic over the last few years, it’s Hamilton Pool Road. Plans for improvement on Hamilton Pool Road include widening the roadway between Highway 71 and RM 12, extending the shoulders of the road all the way to Cueva Drive and adding a center turn lane at Crumley Ranch Road. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2015.

So what’s the reason for all these improvements? Several new homes are being built every day in the Bee Cave and Lakeway area in communities whose residents will use these roadways every day. Some of these neighborhoods include Bella Colinas, Rocky Creek, Rough Hollow and Belvedere, to name a few. These improvements will bring future relief to commuters as more and more residents choose to call the area home.
