With the holiday season upon us, it’s a great time to be thankful for what we have and, more importantly, to give back to our community. This year, through our Love Austin initiative, Reilly Realtors is sponsoring a 2014 Holiday Donation Drive for SafePlace. This local Austin organization provides services and support to victims of sexual and domestic violence, and their families, in the greater Austin area. Last year, SafePlace helped over 5,000 of our neighbors. We are excited to be able to help support this great organization through our donation drive. This cause is especially close to our hearts after the loss of Kelly Turner. "A friend of mine, Kelly A. Turner, was recently a victim of domestic violence and we miss her dearly." says our agent, Joanna Jennings. "Your contribution to SafePlace can help individuals find the safety and support they need and deserve. Friends of Kelly would especially appreciate donations to SafePlace in Kelly A. Turner's honor." A memorial service will also be held in her honor on November 17.
SafePlace was first established as the Austin Rape Crisis Center and Center for Battered Women in the 1970s. Over the past 40 years, SafePlace has grown to extend its services throughout the Travis County area, and is nationally recognized for its innovative programs that are used throughout the country by law enforcement agencies and shelters. SafePlace provides immediate services to victims through the organization’s 24-hour hotline, shelter, counseling services, hospital accompaniment and legal services. SafePlace also offers programs to build awareness and educate the community about sexual and domestic violence. These programs include Expect Respect for teens, Disability and Deaf services and Community Education and Outreach.
We hope you will join us and donate to SafePlace this holiday season. In addition to collecting donations, we will be hosting a donation event at BlackFinn in The Domain on December 1st between 5 - 8 pm. Come out and enjoy great food, happy hour and a silent auction to raise money for SafePlace. "Organizations like SafePlace accept donations all year round, but their need for donations is even higher this time of the year," says our agent Ellen Outlaw. "Many of the families affected by sexual and domestic violence that come to SafePlace cannot afford toys and gifts for the holidays." Some of their most needed items are new and gently used toys, clothing for women and children, toiletries of any kind, and canned food. To donate, please contact our office at 512-600-1800, or any of our Reilly Realtors’ agents, and we will arrange to pick up your items before December 15th.
