After a little over a year of construction, the city of Round Rock is ready to unveil its latest project. The Round Rock Sports Center, an indoor sports facility, is slated to open its doors before Christmas. The ground-breaking ceremony was held last November, and since then the $14.9 million project has stayed on schedule. The facility measures 83,000 square feet in size and covers a total of 23 acres. 50,000 square feet of the sports center is dedicated to the athletic floor. The floor can support six basketball courts or twelve volleyball courts at one time. The space can also be used for other sporting events like wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading, rock climbing and martial arts. Plans include permanent seats for 1,276 attendees, but the Round Rock Sports Center has the capacity to hold up to 3,000 attendees and athletes.
Although the Round Rock Sports Center isn’t expected to generate much income on its own, the city of Round Rock expects income to come from other sources. The city hopes to attract out-of-town guests for large tournaments and other athletic events that will increase revenue for hotels, restaurants and other local businesses. The sports center is expected to bring in 1,500 to 2,000 athletes and families for sporting events each weekend, but larger events like volleyball and gymnastics tournaments could attract more. The Round Rock Sports Center is within walking distance of several hotels and local restaurants like Rudy’s Barbeque and Jack Allen’s Kitchen. The revenue generated by these local businesses as a result of the influx of sports center visitors could contribute about $6 million to the Round Rock economy. The Round Rock Sports Center is currently booked nearly every weekend between January and July 2014.
Marketing itself as the “Sports Capital of Texas”, the city of Round Rock has gone to great lengths to bring youth sports tournaments and other sporting events to its facilities. In 2008, the outdoor sports facilities at Old Settlers Park underwent $18.2 million in renovations. The 570 acre park now includes twenty baseball fields, five softball fields, seven soccer fields and two football fields. Multiple sporting events have been held at the park since its completion. The city’s minor league baseball team, the Round Rock Express, also attracts sports fans to the city. The Round Rock Sports Center will host its first tournament on the weekend of January 18. Round Rock citizens can expect the center to open its doors within the next two weeks.
