Have Fun (Out of the Sun)

Ice CreamSchool is almost here again, but those summer heat waves aren’t quite through yet. And for families, couples or even singles in Austin, that means we have at least another month of sweating the summer heat until that brief Texas Fall arrives. So to help you stay cool this weekend,  we’ve come up with a list of our favorite things to do in Austin during the Texas heat. 1. Stay indoors. If you’re trying to escape the heat, there’s no better way to do it than by staying in the nice cool A/C. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit at home all day. Austin has some of the best museums in the nation - and yes, they are air-conditioned. No matter what you're interested in, you can almost always find a museum that fits your tastes. If you enjoy the history of Texas and it’s military, you should pay a visit to the Camp Mabry Texas Military Forces Museum or the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Two of my favorites are on the UT campus - the Blanton Museum of Art and the Texas Natural Science Center's Texas Memorial Museum, where you can learn all about Texas wildlife and see exhibits on dinosaurs.  Best of all, many of these are free to the public!
2. Get wet. Another great way to stay cool in Austin is to take a trip to the many local swimming locations. Why not spend the day kayaking or paddle boarding on Town Lake? Better yet, take a trip to the cool refreshing waters of Barton Springs Pool. Hamilton Pool is another great option, although the drive is a bit farther. And for those who like to hike before a swim, there are plenty of places along 360 where you can experience beautiful views before hopping into the water. 3. I scream, you scream. Another great tradition that combines the uniqueness of Austin and staying cool is enjoying the delightful summer treats of ice cream, snow cones and the like. If you’re new to Austin, you may have heard a thing or two about Amy’s Ice cream. If you haven’t had it yet, you need to try it. Amy’ is home to delicious flavors and is a great way to keep everyone cool. Austin also has plenty of food trailers that serve up frozen treats, such as Sno-beach and Sweet Caroline’s Snow Shack. And there’s always the classic Bananarchy: Revolutionary Desserts. So remember, there’s no need to be stuck in the heat when Austin has so many ways to keep cool! Museums, pools and frozen dessert. What more could you ask for?
