Two Austin area high schools were recently named among the top 25 high schools in the country by Business Insider. The Liberal Arts and Science Academy was ranked #14, while Westlake High School was named #7. Over 100,000 schools across the country were surveyed based on the feedback of over 300,000 students and parents. Each school received a grade for academics, student culture and diversity, teachers, and resources and facilities.

At number 14, the Liberal Arts and Science Academy received an A+ for academics, A for culture and diversity, A+ for teachers, and B+ for resources and facilities. The Liberal Arts and Science Academy is the only magnet high school in Austin ISD. That means that students from across the Austin school district can attend this high school, regardless of where they live. The Liberal Arts and Science Academy began in the mid-1980s as a part of Lyndon B. Johnson High School in South Austin. The school still shares a campus with LBJ High School, but has been recognized as an independent high school since 2007. Last year 94% of the school’s graduating class went on to study at four-year colleges. The advanced curriculum at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy makes the school a regular on lists of the best schools in the country.

Westlake High School received an A+ for academics, B- for culture and diversity, A+ for teachers, and A+ for resources and facilities. It is part of the Eanes school district, which is one of the most highly-rated districts in the Austin area. Westlake High School opened in the 1970s to serve the growing population of the Eanes school district. Currently, 2,598 students are enrolled at Westlake High School. In 2012, 99% of Westlake’s graduating class went to study at a four-year college. In addition to academics, Westlake is also known for its athletic programs. Several student athletes have gone on to play college and professional sports, including Nick Foles, Drew Brees, Ryan Swope and Chris Mihm. Like the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy, Westlake High School is also consistently ranked among the top schools in the country by news publications.
