6 Spring Break Activities in Austin

With classes on hold and warmer weather coming in, Spring Break is always a fun time for Austin area students. There are tons of activities throughout the Austin area to keep the kids entertained during their school break. Check out favorite six events your family can enjoy together this Spring Break in the Austin area:

SXSW Gaming Expo- This FREE South by Southwest event is perfect for the gamer in your family. Explore brand new games and old favorites, and see well known gamers play on the Geek Stage. The event will be held at the Austin Convention Center Thursday, March 17th through Saturday March 19th, from 12 - 8 pm. Be sure to download a Guest Pass to access the event free!

Thinkery Spring Break Camps- If your child loves to learn and create, the Thinkery Spring Break camps are perfect. The Thinkery offers camps for children from Pre-K to 5th grade. This year’s camps focus on color and lights, as well as robotics for older children. Camps are offered throughout Spring Break (March 14th - 18th) for half days for Pre-K and Kindergarten ages, and full days for 1st grade and up. Contact the Thinkery to reserve a spot for your child.

Austin Steam Train- Spend a day just outside the Austin area riding a historic locomotive. The train departs from Bertram with a two hour stop in Burnet. Explore the historic city of Burnet during your stop, whether its a leisurely lunch or a show of the Wild West Gunfight. The train departs at 11 am and returns at 3:30 pm. Book your ride Tuesday, March 15th, Wednesday, March 16th, or Thursday, March 17th.

Rodeo Austin- Whether or not you’re a rodeo fan, Rodeo Austin has something for everyone to enjoy. The carnival is open daily from 11 am to midnight throughout Spring Break, with tons of rides, a ferris wheel, games, and food. The little ones will love the Kidstown petting zoo. Wristbands are required to access the carnival, with one-day and season options. Country artists Gary Allen, Cam, and the Josh Abbot Band take the stage after dark for exciting concerts. Of course, the highlight of the rodeo are the rodeo events, from mutton-busting to team roping. Get your tickets early at the Rodeo Austin website.

Flashlight Friday- Explore the night landscape of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center by flashlight. This event is open to kids ages 5 - 12 and their parents. Learn about and maybe catch a glimpse of the critters that come out at night, or take the night hike challenge without a flashlight. This event will be held Friday, March 18th, from 7:30 - 9 pm. Be sure to register before attending.

Zach Scott Theater- This musical performance of James and the Giant Peach is a perfect low-key family outing. There are three showtimes Spring Break weekend as part of the theater’s family series. Kids of all ages will enjoy the adventures brought to life from the pages of Ronald Dahl’s popular novel. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at the theater’s website.
