Lake Travis is one of the seven Texas Highland Lakes which are actually formed by a chain of dams constructed in the 1930s and 1940s on the Colorado River. The lake is controlled by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) who adjusts the water level to prevent flooding. Upstream from Lake Travis is Lake Marble Falls, and downstream is Lake Austin, which feeds to Lady Bird Lake (aka Town Lake) in the center of Austin. Lake Travis, thanks to its size (it’s the longest of the Highland Lakes), is one of Austin’s most popular water recreation destinations. And with many properties situated on the water, it’s possible to literally have the lake in your backyard.
