Austin Waterfront Homes | Austin Lakefront Homes
Owning an Austin waterfront home is a dream for many. Though there are a few waterfront homes in Austin located on creeks, when most people think of Austin waterfront homes they think of those on Lake Travis, Lake Austin, and Lady Bird Lake. These lakes are really part of the larger Highland Lakes system, which is a series of man-made lakes on the Colorado River starting with Lake Buchanan upstream, and ending with Lady Bird Lake downstream. Lake Travis is the largest of the Highland Lakes and its level, which is controlled by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), fluctuates significantly depending on the amount of rain the area receives. Closer to downtown is Lake Austin waterfront, a bit pricier than upstream waterfront, but also a bit chillier since it is fed from the bottom of Lake Travis. For years, the lake in the center of Austin was known as Town Lake, but after Lady Bird Johnson died in 2007 the City of Austin changed the name to Lady Bird Lake in honor of her efforts to develop the trail system around the lake. The trail at Lady Bird Lake is now one of Austin's most used and beloved assets - you'll always see joggers, cyclists, and hikers out enjoying it. Homes on Lady Bird Lake are hard to come by and some of the most expensive Austin lakefront homes you'll find.
